The Tale
Of the Melon City - Vikram Seth
Ques 1 : Why were the people happy with their melon king? Ans 1: The melon was chosen and coroneted as the king of the state as per the old custom. When someone asks them why their king appears to be a melon, they reply that if his majesty takes delight in being a melon , it is alright with them as they have no right to say what he should be as long s he leaves them in peace and liberty. It seems that the principles of non- interference or Laissit fair are well established in that state. Ques 2 : Why did the king order the construction of the arch? Ans 2: The king was fair an gentle. He seem to be interested in the welfare of the masses. So he proclaimed that an arch should be constructed which should extend through the major thoroughfare. The purpose of the arch was to improve the onlooker morally and provide aesthetic joy to them. Ques 3 : What was the king's reaction when the crown fell under the arch? Ans 3: The king lost his temper and responded negatively when his crown fell due to the lower built arch. He immediately ordered the hanging of the chief of builders, holding him responsible for his disgrace and dishonor among the people. Ques 4 : Why did king ordered that the chief of builders must be hanged? Ans 4: One day the king was passing by the side of thoroughfare. The arch was constructed so low that the king's crown truck against it and fell off. Immediately the annoyed king responded with the hanging of the chief of builders as he was the culprit of the bizarre event. Ques 5 : How did the chief of builders saved himself from being hanged? Ans 5: When the King called the chief of builders to the scaffold, he cleverly shifted the responsibility of the arch to the workmen in his defense. He blamed the laborers for all the disgrace so that the just king would spare his life. As a result, the king adjourned his proceedings for a moment and then decided to have all the construction workers to be hanged. Ques 6 : What did the workmen say in their defence when the king ordered them to be hanged? Ans 6: The workmen told the king in their defence that it was all because of the faulty size of the bricks. The bricks they used in the construction of the arch were slightly larger that what they had ordered. Indirectly and slyly, they saved their lives by shifting the responsibility to the masons. Ques 7 : Why did the king ordered that someone must be hanged immediately ? Ans 7 : The king ordered that someone must be hanged immediately as it was the public demand. The noose had been set up already. Since the moment the infuriated king ordained the hanging of the culprit, the crowd was getting restless. Also, the ministers eagerly wanted the hanging, otherwise the crowd might have risen in revolt. Ques 8 : Who was the wisest man? What did he say? Ans 8: An old man with grey hairs was presented before the king in the name of ' the wisest man'. The old man was so weak that he couldn't walk or see, he spoke in a trembling voice. The ministers explained the whole situation to the wisest man and he advised the king to hang the arch itself among the people keeping him the culprit. Ques 9 : Was the old man selected by the King's men really 'the wisest man' ? How can you say? Ans 9 : The king's men chose the wrong person as one cannot be called 'wise' on the basis of his appearance. Intelligence comes with true knowledge and not with age or grey hairs. The advice of hanging the arch given by the old man was really futile and absurd. Logically, the lifeless things couldn't restore the King's grace by hanging. Ques 10 : How was the new king chosen? Ans 10 : After the demise of the placid king, the issue came up that who would be the next king. The old custom invoked and the ministers sent out heralds to proclaim that the next person to pass the city gate would chose the king. An idiot happened to pass the king and uttered Melon as the answer to 'Who was to be the king?'. Actually this was his pet answer to all the questions since he liked melons. The ministers coroneted a melon and placing the melon king reverently at the throne. Ques 11 : Why did the idiot say 'A Melon'? What was its consequence ? Ans 11 : After the death of the just and placid king, the ministers had sent out heralds to proclaim that the next person to pass the city gate would chose the king. An idiot happened to pass the king and uttered Melon as the answer to 'Who was to be the king?'. Actually this was his pet answer to all the questions since he liked melons. As a result of his folly of assertion, a melon was coroneted as the new king of the state. Ques 12 : What is the principle of Laissist fair? Ans 12 : The principles of non-interference are commonly called Laissist fair. |
